"Positive Commenters Bring Deaf Unity"

Wow good vlog! I have to admit I am one of them! I start my own blogs and got a lot of negative and nasty or bad comments so I quit doing my blog after a while... Hmm I hope you make some impact on deaf people with your comment.

mishkazena said...

I know. I saw with dismay the effects of negative comments on the bloggers/vloggers. I never could understand the need of some people to be so nasty and tearing down other Deaf people.

Civility and respect help people get along better. When commenters attack and pull down the vloggers/bloggers, they are actually destroying Deaf Unity, like you say. Maybe this will help them understand the consequences of their behavior. Your wife also has a beautiful message.

Excellent analogy! I couldn't agree more with you. While it is unfortunate that some negative comments are turning off some blogges/vloggers, we need to remain strong and stick to the principles.

Despite some negative comments, I do feel good about Deaf people these days. I mentioned in one of my recent vlogs that I never had so diverse friends before. I continue to be grateful that many of you, Deaf readers, who taught us some great life lessons.

For me, I did not reduce my number of vlogging because of negative comments but I have been very busy just like everyone else. I am still very positive and upbeat about Deaf people's lives.

Thank you John. Your message is solid and clear. Very needed right now. I have felt the same loss over watching some v/bloggers slowly disappear.

we have to keep our heads up, think positive and keep cool, just like you always remind us.

Thanks for the link to Jill's vlog post. Very touching.

You guys are both doing great things. Keep the strong and positive messages coming! The world needs you both!

I did not notice anything missing!?!

Free of speech?

Karen Mayes said...

Hmmm... glad you brought up your concern. I closed down my v/blog because of the negative comments which I did not publish (therefore, violating the freedom of speech... sigh). The comments were from anonymous and were not nice, especially about my children (one called me child abuser, for "forcing" my son to become oral.) Last month when I went to the mall in Castleton, a parent who recognized me from my blogspot came to me and started criticizing me. I did not and still do not know her name and what she said turned me off... that I was ashamed of my children, that I was trying to fix them, to make them hearing, that I should get over it, accept their deafness, etc. I just stood and listened and said that was her opinion and wished her a nice day and left her. At that point, I decided to close down my blogspot.

I find leaving comments on people's v/bloggers is more postive so I am sticking to this for now.

Hi ABC,

Yes I agree with your comments about parallels of American natives and Deaf people.

For now, our Deaf community is in a serious crisis all over the world due to a new powerful group which does not recognize rights of Deaf people.

For years, we have always been reacted to any serious problem. I have noticed that we have not done is "proactive".

For now, in Canada, we have set up our own Deaf Cultural Centre that is part of proactive plan. We need to spread out positive and good news to people.

In my v/blogs, I tend to challenge and debate serious issues. I think some think my comments are negative and some thinkg my comments are positive and so on depending on everyone's view.

But your comments make me think twice and I will try to make balance comments (bad and good) for greater purpose of Deaf community.

Thanks for bringing up and I just wonder why your vlog is in extra not regular????

Hi!

I am so glad that you decided to share your concern. I will check out Jill's in a few :)

It's somewhat funny. When my husband (Deafchip) decided to join Deafread and set up his own blog, I decided to set up my own as well.

But for some reasons, I was not ready to release my blog to public. Instead, I wanted to see how things go with my husband's. Oh boy, I saw so much 'strong' comments and all that, I decided not to go any further except for a few comments that I made - friendly ones, of course.

I suppose I will have to wait and see if "commenters" will change their way into positive comments/encouragements....perhaps, I will re-consider....

Cheers,
Kathryn

Perhaps those who get too many negative comments should use a blogsite that requires registration before one can post comments, such as Xanga.com. That's where mine are posted, even though I am looking for a different site that will allow more flexibility. So far, no problems with mean comments.

AslMan said...

You said it! We're supposed to be in unity of our culture. It's ok to have disagreement with each other, but it helps us to learn and grow and accept the difference. But never ever put down one another or to play favorite on one side. We all can discuss one another and learn from each others. Thanks for educated us.

Anonymous said...

I don't have a v/blog, and I'm hearing. Many of you have probably seen my comments around.

I cannot sign well enough yet to watch this vlog, but from the comments made I get the gist of the issue. I agree, I tried twice to start a blog, just for my own journaling purposes. Both times I stopped because of having to put up with things I shouldn't have to.

I often make comments on blogs, lately deaf ones (due to a friend inspiring me) because I like to read about what others think, and respond with my own thoughts. However, the tone of my comments usually matches the tone of the post.

Sometimes what I say may be in disagreement with the post, but I always try to say it in an acceptable way.

I was told 'Shut up you idiot." in response to a comment I made the other night. Because I disagreed with the poster about something and I told him so. I thinkk this is the kind of behaviour that turns people off. What's the point of posting your thoughts if people are just going to attack them.

To those of you who soldier on, I salute you. Keep up the good work.

Hi John,

ILY for bringing this up. Excellent example about the Native Americans as we could be next or is it already happening? (shuddering)

It is no question that we, b/vloggers, will thrive more when we receive positive comments also constructive feedback since it is not necessarily a bad thing and that we always look for room of improvement.

Yes, David (Deafchip), we need to be productive and focus on being proactive but sometimes we use this avenue to vent out our frustrations about certain issues or sharing our perspectives that will hopefully make us be more aware of the issues.

I feel that it is okay for people to disagree but the main problem is how they address it. I just look at the whole picture as I feel that in spite of negative comments I had seen about myself, there are more positive comments I had received as well. I realize that we will always deal with both positive and negative comments but not necessarily get discouraged or personal about it.

Karen, I am sorry you had to go through this experience but remember it was just an opinion of this dissenting group that was not necessarily a reflection of the whole deaf community.

If you b/vloggers quit because of this reason, the negative commenters will prevail. I know it is not that easy going through this (believe me, I have been there) but we got to remain strong as there are many viewers out there who will enjoy or benefit from from our b/vlogs.

Thanks for bringing it up!

United we stand, Divided we fall.

While freedom of speech is good, some commenters do go too far and their motives seems to be in question.

Also if any bloggers are going to bring up controversial subjects, one can expect controversial comments. Guess it goes with the territory.

To me it is proof of crab theory in play. pfft who cares! we all are unique in our own way. We all can succeed in our own way, no need to pull anyone down. How hard is it to "respect" other's opinion? No one said anyone had to abide by it!

Lets spread the love~

Anonymous said...

Hi John,

I agreed 100% with everything you had to say about this subject. Last month a friend of our by the name of Roshay who use to work with my wife Sheri at Norcal Center on Deafness visited us and had many great things to say about you. Keep up the positive attitude and hopefully it will rub off on the rest of the deaf community.

Thanks

It is sad, that there are nasty commenters who can't turn it around and be more respectful!

One of the bloggers should have monitor with nasty commenters. It is hurting the deaf community very much.

Let's bring them back - DEAF rules!

I have notice at this issue, too. I hope I can contribute my videos to increase number of vlog. :)

I will create new video relate to anonymous. We need to reevaluate on this issue.

Hi John and Jill,

Thanks for sharing it with us, it makes us think and ponder over the issue of deaf unity and commenters.

I stopped my blog not because I was receiving negative comments but I did not receive very many comments. I see some blog/vlogs who get a lot of comments, that helps them keep going. If a blog or vlog gets very few or no comments, then why is it a point to go along when you are not sure if people are reading your blogs/vlogs or not. So comments do have an impact and encouragement for bloggers/vloggers to keep going. So maybe that is another reason why they do not blog/vlog because they do not get many comments. I see this as a popularity contest. Is that good or bad, I don't know?

As for Cho, he was diagnosed as having autism when he first arrived to America. His family thought he was doing very well in school, did not seek help for his autism. Also some students said that they tried to talk to Cho but he refused to talk to them and it was very difficult to get to know him as a person. Sometimes, we could try to get help and provide counseling but then that person refuses all of it, what can we do? This is a very hard situation and unfortunately, Cho turned all of his anger into violence and death. Fortunately, for us, it does not happen to each person who may have disability like autism who will go out and shoot people, it is a rare case like Cho that happened. I hope that we will be more aware and sensitive to people like Cho who want to be different and to acknowledge them for who they are. Cho also probably brought some of it to himself, I suspect to gain attention and that resulted in negative attention instead of positive attention. Some people thrive on negative attention and resent when people heap praise and positive attention on them. It sounds strange but it is true. Educators and parents need to develop strategies and skills and other things to make these kids feel included and to help them feel good and to learn how to accept positive attention/praise without disdain or whatever.

You will always be surprised that you will find out whose IP addresses later. Maybe he/she may be your old buddy or your family-in-law (just kidding, Jill)...so you get picture.

Nasty commentators would not admit in public….

ABC,
Thanks for bringing this one up! That's why I have always against the comments from the anonymous. Nevertheless, now I decided to give up my power and let anonymous posting their comments in exchange of paying me some respect. I still reject anonymous comments if they are NOT necessary to be recognized. If they really want to share and tell the world about their thoughts, why don't they tell their REAL name!!!??

Sometimes, I got good comments from anonymous and one bad sentence out of the big paragraph and then I have to reject! Why should I allow the anonymous to control by posting comments on my website? I control my website and they had better use their judgment how to post comment properly! If they (anonymous) want to do the same way they said to my website, they SHOULD set their website up and do whatever they want to post.

Later,
Jeff

Hi John ABC(D), is that your guess? The v/bloggers may be busy with life or other stuff. I try to vlog once a week now due to school. About the American Indians, tribes were established due to geographical distance (regions) across the nation. Most tribes have no intention to become collective. Like the other tribes, they compete for land, resources, or whatever. When the Spanish and White Europeans arrived, their populations dropped rapidly due to disease, famine, and genocide. I took American history some years back from an actual Indian professor. They are called "The People." We are the next “People” to be oppressed hmm? Nevertheless, your advice is heeded. I had to deal with couple digs (subtle or not) myself and I guess some readers want to see drama. Vlog responses are the highest hits of all. Worth it or not? I think it's not worth it and best to share what is unique about yourself. Skills, hobbies, talents, video, photos, travel, etc. that I like to see in person, learn something new to try it out or visit somewhere. DR hasn’t been a year yet and we’re learning. I use same screen name and real name since last year.

Hello there, Bloggers and Vloggers, you should be well prepared that you will expect some nasty and negative remarks from those people...they could be not your friends or jealous of your succeed in express your story of this or that. I simply will ignore the simple minded people who do not appreciate those educated blogs and vlogs. Deaf people are very critical people, they do not know how to appreciate or praise on good things. Lot of hearing people are being attacked too, they do not quit so please do not be a quitter for such stupid remarks from simple minded people. Think possitive from many who enjoy those blogs and vlogs.

Anonymous said...

I kinda disagree that negative comments are primarly responsible for the shrinking pool of deaf/Deaf bloggers and vloggers.

That is very common for people in general, get exicted about the new trend(s)/fad(s), then have the "fatigue" mentality with something and move on with other activities.

I must admit that I really am SICK of computers and sit in the front of monitor most of the time. I rather do something physical than sitting on my rear side.

I am really surprised that I never get any kind of nasty comments on my blog, RLMDEAF so far. *knock on wood* I often wonder!

I do not belive in any kind of censorship myself which I have not edit or delete any unpleasant or offensive comments.

I would delete any comment if someone have the malice to smear someone without any further proof. That is it!

I hardly have a substantial time to compose the blog writing from time to time. I personally rather have a vlog posting.

Handful of people KNOW that I would fight back if someone leave nasty or untruthful comment regarding me.

I used to ignore people if they do malice toward me. I realize that too many people do not have skills to tell if this comment or story or rumor to be factually true or not. I have no choice at all. I have to step in if someone make intentional smear campaign or lie about me.

Hmmm, I think that at least SOME of us hold back because we feel that our blog posts are not "interesting" or serious enough to make it to DeafRead. Personally we blog/vlog on topics that are important to ourselves, but might not be to the rest of the deaf community. Alot of "ink" was used to cover the Wright murder trial, which was kind of boring in itself because everyone knew what the outcome would be. I "kinda" felt that some blogs/vlogs were ignored, just to cover the trial, which was not really fair. Also, posts by the same person, over and over and OVER again makes one wonder why the favortism?

I am blunt, but at my age I have earned the right to say what and how I feel, so there it is!

Hi John,

I cannot agree more! I am glad to see so many commenters being on your side. I am disappointed to see no comment to your vlog by DeafRead editorial staff.

The difference between DeafDC
and DeafRead is enormously different.

DeafDC has much more noble and higher class editorial and more knowledgeable staff. They are much more sensitive and concerned. They would delete any attack or offense by any blogger or commenter.

Whereas:

DeafRead is indifferent, insensitive, and unconcerned,
allowing attacks and offenses in bloggers' articles.

If any attacker oroffenser submits his article or comment to a well-respected newspaper, New York Times or Washington Post, they would say, "Unprintable. Get lost!"

We really can't compare blogs with washington times or NY Post because blogs are not a newspaper company. blogs are different from those media outlets. Blogs are considered "citizen journalism". Think of "citizen policing" like neighborhood watch. They're not professional police and nor do they have to hold up to high standards as police. Now, that is my opinion and anyone is free to disagree. :)

I decided to do some checking to see if the bloggers in world (hearing) have the same problem. They do! Big time! same, no difference.

I think that no one should be detered by nasty comments. Keep on vlogging, keep on blogging.

In Deafread, I see some put downs and bashings by known commenters as well as anonymous, but more with anonymous.

To all v/bloggers, remember, it is your own blog, you make the rules and don't let anyone stop you from v/blogging!

This is in response to Jean's comment. It's very interesting that your comment would be negative about Deafread under a vlog that just discussed positive comments.

DeafDc and Deafread are entirely different. Deafread is not a blog. It's a blog aggregator that doesn't have control over its bloggers and especially their comments.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to expect Deafread to check the tens of new blogs added daily if to see if the comments board have become negative.

Without contentions deaf.read would be struggling, you have only to look at the Gallaudet thing to see that. If deaf.read or deaf vblogger/bloggers all decided to have a'love in' with positive comments only, there would be a mass switch off.

Diversity and differing viewpoints make life. If you log in to 'social deaf sites' they are struggling, they are mostly small cliques, talking about wallaper, because most socialising goes on in 'chat sites'.

Deaf.read is a political animal no doubt about it ! Politics attract heated debates and and they in turn attract spoilers, and abusers. While some sort of moderation is probably neccessary to weed them out, anonymous posiings ar not the same genereally.

If we go back to the net a few years ago, the advice given was NEVER give out your name or where you live etc, deaf seem to have abandoned this advice. Vlogging makes it difficult too !

The netissue whether you are deaf or not, is how to moderate, and at what point. Deaf.read by its nature is very 'Deaf' oriented, so anyone coming in and not wholly supportingthis, stands a very good chance of being dropped, is this the right reason ?

One view of American sites is they are very insualr ones, despite the being the land where 'anything goes'.

I admired your honesty in perspective of deaf and hard of hearing vloggers, bloggers, and commenters to come together for harmony.
Of course, everyone have right to disagree but we can discuss to solve any problems or any individuals have entitled their own opinions to express.
Negative comments can be very hurtful without any diplomatically approaches.
Same example as Jill mentioned relvant of VA tech massacre and this shooter's personalities. It reminded me of Columbine High School in Litteton (sp error), Colorado in about 8 years ago. Two guys were killed students and teachers. It had to do with their intimidation by the students, who were bullied, enjoy being jock, and social stratification. That made me angry at the students, who bullied and intimidated other students with diversity or intelligent levels. Every individual are imperfect lifestyle on the earth and we need to treat in respect for others. Diplomatically talking is essential factor that lead to the health discussion rather than using nasty words, being bully, inequalities, gender roles, and cultural pespectives. Respect is also essential factor to show our love like Jill just mention earlier.
UNITY FOR DEAF AMERICANS AND INTERNATIONALS!

Message to Aidan

Enjoyed your latest vlog.... I want to say that there are many anonymous or pseudonymous commentators who DO send positive or encouraging comments. I am one of them and like sending positive feedback or comments. Could NEVER do that to anyone because of my strong conscience and positivism. Please do not lump us together with those "cockroaches".

Hi Oscar

I wanted to respond to your five vlogs and express my sincere thanks for taking the trouble to re-do your vlogs. It was much appreciated... It was me who suggested you break down the 36 minute vlog into one-issue vlogs... Unfortunately, you switched your vlog to RSS so I could not access it.

I was so frustrated about not being able to reach you and felt bad about not sending you the feedback. Please accept my apologies. I want to say I found your five-vlog series interesting and informative. Good points. I have noticed how much you have progressed since your first one last month. Keep up with your vlogging. You have a lot to offer to us all!.

I want to ask if you can please put down your boots and come up front so we can see you up close (not your boots, smile). Oscar feels the same. You sign so fast so please slow down your fingerspelling a bit. I could not send my comments to your blogsite. Thanks.

I absolutely support you 100 percent for your two children's decisions about their learning style. Each child is different. Listen to yourself as a mom and to your children's needs and wishes. You know your children best. Be strong for yourself and for your two children. I can see you want to take a break from vlogging and blogging. Go for it, but do come back when you are ready. I feel a lot for you. Hugs.

I agree with your comment about other commenters who gave nasty and hurtful comments. Vloggers/Bloggers do not have to take them so seriously..ignore them. Look at former Prez Clinton...he keeps his pleasant approach even though his "sex scandal" went through.

So hope you all return as stronger than ever after you read my comment. Smile.

Good Luck

John,

You raised a good point about why some vloggers/bloggers no longer are posting their rants.

These commenters who have been leaving nasty or bad comments have a lot to learn. They need to learn how to respect others, even though they disagree with the rants. It's OK to say that they disagree, but it's not OK to oppress and leave unnecessary comments. Instead, they can at least KINDLY express their opinions if they disagree.

Yeah, this country has freedom of speech. But, don't you have a heart? Do you know how it feels to be oppressed by others or getting inappropriate comments on your blog? (if you have one) I'm sure you wouldn't like that. You might would say that you don't care. But, come on... Please have a heart!

Like what John said: This is something to think about. Think twice.

PS - I watched Jill's vlog. You have such a wonderful wife. Bless the both of you! :)

Hi John (and Jill),
Nice vlog with a powerful message-- love and respect go a long way. Recognizing the unique differences as well as our common bonds can only make us stronger and more connected.
