Great to listen to the dorm escapedes! Yes, at least 80% of learning occurs OUTSIDE of classrooms and I am planning to send my daughter to spend a few nights at the dorm when she gets older, in the elementary school, so that she could grow socially.

When I attended CID in STL, I was jealous of the residential students who regalled us day pupils with the stories of what happened the night before, etc.

Yes, I was a student at ILL SD. CHAMP! I guess it faded away around 1987. Things changed time to time. The merry go round removed.

The BEST year was 1985 when I was a junior high student. David Brown, Jim Luttrell, Ted Clemons, Mike Aubry were my dormparents. I bet you knew them very well.

Also, I always looked up at your name on record board in old gym because you led assists in basketball. Your name is still leading, I am behind you. ;)

Thanks for sharing...

Hi there John and Jill. First I want to say how much joy you both bring to my day when I watch you both interact on a video clip. I laughed as Jill snuck up behind you John, and it was almost like you didn't see her. It was cute!

I loved your dorm stories. I didn't attend a residential school as a child, but I worked as a school counselor in 1 for almost 10 years. I worked the swing shift, which meant I was there during the dorm hours (1pm - 9pm).

I remember a few incidents though when the kids in the dorms went wild! Each year on the last day of school (the night before), the girls in the middle and high school groups would TP (toilet paper) the entire dorm section. One year, they added shaving cream too! Oh what a mess it was! What they didn't know was that the following weekend there was a group of parents coming to stay in the dorms for a special event. The houseparents had worked their last shift and they were officially off duty for the summer. The kids were on their way home for the summer and that left only a few staff on campus. Guess who had to clean up?!! Ugh! It took us forever! Silly kids!

I also worked in an office that was on the bottom floor of the little boys dorm one year, near the nurses station. I had a light switch outside of my door (like a door bell). Any time the little boys or other kids came to get their medicines, they would dare each other to turn off my light as they passed by. Grrrrr....

Sometimes I was deep in the middle of an emotional counseling session with students and suddenly the light would go off and stay off, or it would flash a hundred times! Ugh! I had to buy a flashlight to keep near my chair so I could turn it on and find my way to the door, open it up and turn the light back on again. I never found who did this. Too many kids did it. Instead, I asked for another office. Ha. Silly kids.

Thanks for sharing your stories!

Seeing Jill creeping up behind John's back while he seem unaware of her actions made me chuckle.

Oh, yes, there are a lot of great memories connected with the dorm life. It seems some of the best times are after the lights were turned off for the night. Our favorite was trying to drive the housemother crazy. Usually she never figured who the culprits were. *laughing*

Funny intro and Jill too. Yes, good times at dorm cuz I have no brothers so it was a blast for me. Interesting of your night peek sign. I think we signed "army scout" sign back then. I do know if caught, big whack paddle. Many stories, yes thanks.

Your wife sneaking behind you cracked me up. I had done like that to my husband when he talked with some of his friends/former students via vp. One of these times I was outside by the window jumping up and down to startle him. His former student asked him why he jumped and he said "MY WIFE IS BRAT!" explaining to her about what I had done to him. Ha, ha, ha!

I will try to open my memory chip to find if there is any funny memories connected with dorm life. I think yours was more fun than mine when I was a student at the Washington SD. I remember one day one of my classmates Shelly tied the sanitary pads together making a chain and dragged them along the dorm hallway. They provided free big boxes of cheap sanitary pads with safety pins for the girls (yawn).

Thanks for bringing many memories back. I had great times at dorm for the first 3 years. After that, I became day student but my heart is still "residence"! I had many funny stories there. I am sure many of us share the same activities. You know O handshape and Y handshape... like 0 handshape in movement meaning nothing happened.... Y handshape means someone is coming run for your life... zoooooooommmm to beds.... many of our hearts just bumping so hard. Housemothers felt our hearts and pull us outta bed and put our arms up for a while... Wow... That was one of a thousand experiences in the dorm.

Hi there!
I noticed that you signed "Y" as referred to "Yard" similar to "Mistake" or "Wrong" and I was wondering if Deafies in Illinois sign that way.

By the way, the life in dorm is always a CHAMP!

John!

You, Grinch! You stole my last several cans of who-deafhash! Ha ha! Just kidding!

I love it!

I told a story of my time at MD School for the Deaf playing Truth & Dare game on my v/blog a couple of weeks ago. I was going to share several dorm stories from time to time.

Most of the stories you told were very similar to mine. Interesting! My dorm mates and I always played in the shower area, too. We even screamed in the corners of shower and bathroom areas to spite some hearing dorm counselors. Same kind of memories! Even the merry-go-around playset!

I do really find it very interesting that many of us, who went to residential schools have so many similar memories or stories!

Cool! I guess it's no need to share my dorm stories except for several ones that you have not mentioned.

Thanks for sharing yours. I always enjoy reading others' stories.

Yes, you can keep the cans! Wink!

Jill, it was nice to see you again!

I enjoyed your sharing memories of dorm life. Indeed, we have our conformity experience in our residential years. Great memory!

One night, I was about 12 years old at CSDRiverside Rubidoux I (Junior High dormitory, now Middle School)in 1977. There were about 20 mischevious boys playing around in the hallway without lights on during the late night. I was joining them to run and to hop in the hallway. One boy spotted the hearing night counselor walking and approaching our dormitory. Then we all scattered out to our bedrooms to sleep quietful. My heart beat rapidly and my eyes closed fully. After school began, the counselor gave the roll call to name individually and ask each of us to go outside the yard. True enough, he called my name. Surprisingly, night counselor knew me include everyone. Apparently, she heard my breathe when she checked every room. Then evening counselor asked us to ran 25 laps in the yard between the dormitory and Junior High School. When everyone were done running, the evening counselor asked us to go out to the cafetria for dinner and come back for shower and do homework for one hour. Then we received another punishment activity. You know what? We sat on the floor separately in the hallway for about one to two hours. My butt was very painful.

John is right about the residential life that was wonderful memories of our lives. Even though we taught ourselves to become very responsiblities to clean and to have chores to do. Graciously thankful to the residential school to teach us to become a man/woman.

More stories to share. I wish one day we can go out on camping to share stories during the campfire. Smile!

hi, I remeber one thing was serious that two girls and i were real tired of houseparent (woman)and never learn how to use asl and she knew one one thing to sign is punishment and keep telling us like that everynight that we have no reasons wrong with anything. we had to do something with her to stop *punishment*so i had an good idea that i dared to threw her favoratie jacket over the window no screens and girls shook thier head and i walked and grabbed it and threw it over the window to make her suffer to walk out of night go home. next day she found it and stopped signing *punishment* that helped lots LOL

I remembered that shower room in dorm. Three of us boys went into shower room and turned on all 10 showerheads into hot water only. We left the doors open leading to hallway. Steam was filled all over hallway from shower room. It was AMAZING and one of my most memorable event! Feels like fog inside the building, LOL.

Hi from Florida! I'm new here. I enjoyed your video especially Jill being silly behind you which made me laugh. I had not attended school for deaf before but I went to Gally and had blast time in dorm life. One of thing I remembered was that some of my friends had fun playing with water pistol, throwing water out of pail from water fountain even with dish soap to each other. SRA in dorm didn't know about it even didn't hear us either so we were lucky not to be caught. Can't u imagine that? I really missed dorm life at Gally so bet some of you missed that too. ABC, keep up good job.

Hi ABC,

LOL. You're humorous guy! Your wife was sneaking behind you while you were on vlogging. Haha. Both of you are awesome couple. :-)

By the way, I've never been to residental dorminatory, but went to a mainstream schools all my life. I only could remember a few things, not related to dorm thing. We used to play on a merry-go-around at a recess time alot and also, we had a very old playground call "cage canopy" (kind like mouse game)go around era 1970's because it went higher in the air and gear speed up. That was fun.

After I left elementary school for Jr. High, I came back to visit my old school found it was gone and replace a new wooden playground. I've some wonderful memories.

Enjoy memories stories. :-)

Well, I have a lot of fun in mt my memries, Very wondeful until I moved to Central NCSD (Greensboro, NC) from 1975 to 1980. We have a good time at dorm, and they has good afternoon activies, Very great wonderful time! Good tme in the dorm until I left there CNCSD in 1980, I come back to NCSD again from 1980 to 1984. that High school dorm was so-so! some r good time and some r bad times! I am very sad that CNCSD was closed on 2000 that time. due of getting small numbers of students, Today, I was shock that my school getting small numbers of student that time. NCSD has only one left dorm keep open it look like back of old time that one main buliding was dorm once from 1980 to 1920's I guess. NCSD has grown and getting large numbers of deafies during 1960's to 1970's, NCSD has 4 dorms until the main buliding was badly need to repair (remodel) the main buliding was open in 1980. they look like as hotel! GRRR! I was shock and surprised that the dorm has each bedroom has central AC/ heating system each bedroom. each student has own bedroom--no more roommates, I was used to roommate that time from 1969 to 1984. Today, NCSD has only one left dorm is main buliding!!!! I was told by some student (girls) about the ghost in that main buliding, I never been in that time, I was told by ghose stories at mani buliding. it never happened to boy dorm!!! HMMM??
