Excellent! I never thought about that. I will bring that up to make deaf impaired people understand how we feel about the term of hearing impaired.

Thanks for making my job a bit easier!

What a great way you use humor to discuss what is a politically correct term and how to make them understand our perspective.

There is a regular local newspaper author who covers deaf community from time to time. Although he is aware not to use the term hearing impaired, the editor changed his wording from deaf and hard of hearing to hearing impaired. Why? 'Cuz it saves some space in the newspaper! Also there are some "deaf" people out there accepting this term to label themselves without really realizing the damage.

I often encourage my students to look up the dictionary what impair means and they become shocked to see how the words can be so negative (broken, make ill, worsen, etc.) After that lesson, never again will they use it to identify themselves.

You are spreading the word on how to react to this mislabeling and I really like your style!

Deaf impaired, ugh, ummm. You add on 'impaired' to Deaf. I am not sure because I don't think we the Deaf will use it if we REMEMBER to bring it up only when the Hearing people label us as 'Hearing Impaired'.
I hate to be labeled 'Hearing Impaired'. I remember one day I requested the seats reserved for me and my family. The Hearing people input the paper on the seats to write 'Hearing Impaired'. I automically turned off. :-/

LOL! I can't stop laughing on the floor!

Thank you for the new additional of termilogy.

Why don't it insert into the Webster's or Oxford dictionary? Or Wipieka (sp error) online. Smile!

Keep humorous vlogging! You're the number#1 of Neilsen's ratings.

It is very true that many corporations are considering the term, "hearing-impaired" which is a professional language. How can we stop them? There is nothing we can do about it.....huh.

EASER TO SAY HEARING IMPAIRED--WE
ARE NOT PART OF HEARING IMPAIRED. MUST SAY DEAF IMPAIRED FROM NOW ON. LOL!!! :D
MY BROTHER, DON IS HIMSELF AN INTERPRETER AND I WILL EMAIL THIS TO HIM "HEARING IMPAIRED". \m/-

Your "Deaf Impaired" sign makes me hungry, heh. I prefer "Signing impaired."

ABC,

Good point! :-) I never thought of "Deaf-impaired". I'm sure hearies will learn the term and needs to call us, "Deaf" instead.

Good vlogging!

You can say the same thing about 'nondeaf' v. 'deaf' I often use that for my academic work.

Just a reminder, "impairment" is a negative ontology so anything attached to it signifies that something is lacking and needs to be 'impaired.' It is a strong medical term of a dianosis. HI or DI; I just use Deaf or nondeaf.

Works for me. :)

Cool to hear DEAF IMPAIRED then Why not to use it for test on Hearing people because Hearing are power to hearing impaired without our DEAF permission! LIKE Government Law use Hearing Impaired as well and why not prpose it to FEDERAL GOVT to change it for new law!

GO DEAF GO HARD OF HEARING GO

Hi ABC,

I learned the term Deaf Impaired many years ago and immediately loved it. I've forgotten all about D.I. until you brought this up again. Thanks for the reminder! :)

Good point.

One thing - what about some organization still use Deaf and Hard of Hearing. For example DHHIG= Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Government.

Why not Deaf in Government. What this means is there are DEAF people out there that still feel the need to include Hard of hearing.

Many Gallaudet graduates are part of DHHIG and they created that name for their organization.

But you're right, why get so specific when Deaf covers it all.

"Deaf-impaired" is a real good ploy! We have to use our pen-paper as our weapon, writing "Can you handread?" because I am tired of hearing people asking if I can lipread. "Are you hand-impaired?" Revenge is sweet!

THUMB UP

Hearing Impaired = Deaf Impaired

same as

Hearing Loss = Deaf Found or Deaf Loss?? any idea??

What a great vlog! I hope we will share our experience when we tell hearing people that they are deaf-impaired (or signing-impaired). It would be good idea to see how people react from different areas of the country.

I continue to be amazed on how much we learned through vlogs! I am overwhelmed but enjoyed every minute of it!

Ha. I'll never look at hearing impaired the same way again. :-)

Jean B., "hand-read", that is a hoot! I like that!

Not sure if I'd ask that back to anyone who ask if I could read their mouth, hahaha...
