You da BOMB! You made it a perfect positive example/impact approaching about deaf culture in hearing world, I am sure the outsiders who were being nosey watching you and waitress/waiter's conversation learned this sign "coffee", too! Often I go to restaurants and gesture "paper/pen" and starting now more and more of those waiter/waitress will sign "you want paper and pen, me can sign" to me, I felt foolish in a way, haha. I should be communicating in ASL instead of gesture from now on.

LOL! That is good way to involve hearing person communication in ASL. I will do that when I go to restaurant. Thanks for sharing with us!

ABC…You were lucky got a good positive attitude server…I cannot picture if you ran into negative attitude server. It would be a whole different story… Thanks for sharing info!

Hi John.

I agree. Humor and gestures always help to turn around awkward moments and put people at ease. Everyone loves to play "Charades." So by gesturing, we are inviting people into a game - the game of communication. When people "get it" - figure out what is being gestured - their self-confidence raises and they feel less afraid of communicating with deaf people. Thanks for pointing this out. :)

HEY JOHN ABC,

Yeah that is so much fun, giving the "ASL Trivia" gestures with that waiter-waitress in restaurant, with added much funny flavors, with all kinds of funny acts. I agree that it helps alot of "foreign" flair out of that table to waiter-waitress with good sense of funny actions. I think that also applies to hearing people, who talk different "acts of voices" in their own accents, with added words etc with face reaction.

I do that similar idea, although you alot more "ASL Champ comedy" than me. I will try get idea from you, LOL some day.

You know NOT ALWAYS the outcome would react from waiter-waitress -- sometimes the OPPOSITE of what you think. They will act "old mean mother maid" with shaking head as like if copy from you. I suppose that ??

John ABC, had you try your "same funny gestures" (like you said in Vlog now) to a waiter-waitress -- AND he-she respond like "old mean mother maid" shaking head ?? Or nothing happen to you ????

Just wonder ?? But this one here, you ABC COMEDY CHAMP ... i like that. HA HA HA !!!!

Come back one month later and hope your waitress is still there. Give her another test.

Hey Lestina!! It has been a while! I found your vlog through google. It is cool. You might forgot who I am... but I am Ellen O'Hara. I used to go Indiana School for the Deaf. I am friends with Erica Hossler who used to be a student under your wife, Jill Lestina. How are your boys doing? Still traveling around in your RV?

Awesome! I sure love postivism!

Approaching hearing people with positive attitude is essential -- to help them accept us for who we are.

I have similar experience dealing with hearing people -- playing the sign game. Some are too friggin dumb to figure out what signs mean. Some can pick up signs quickly. That's the game! :)

Thanks for sharing your experience!

COS: You got a beautiful smile!?! Did you smuggle diamonds? If not, did you make a deal with Debeers? Wink! :)

That's an excellent point, ABC. When I was with a companion, he ordered coffee at a deli but it arrived without cream and sugar.

He called the waitress over, solemnly pointed and when he got the waitress' full attention focused, made the milk-a-cow sign into the cup.

The waitress understood instantly, she burst into giggles and had to rush away, trying to contain herself all the way to the kitchen.

Tears running down her face and still giggling, she brought us milk and sugar.

I told him privately that he had better never do the "milk a tit" sign, ever.

You are a hypocrite.

I know you during college days. You bashed many ladies.

You can't run away from past.

So, get off your fake smile.

Yes I should give this a try sometime and see how they react. Good suggestion!

One time when we were in Canada, a waiter gave me a menu in French, naturally, we didn't understand French, I gestured to the waiter but he could not understand us. It was a very frustrating moment, I gave him lot of gestures, still he didn't get it so I had to physically get up and look for menu that was written in English. Obviously the waiter expected us to know French. I thought it was an interesting experience. Some people do not understand gestures at all. Hopefully in the next few years, people will start to be more comfortable with gestures and understand it more. Just like Regis with "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", he created a sign "L" for loser, he was obviously comfortable with using a body gesture.

Anonymous (Aidan). I am not my past. The past is gone. All is forgiven. College days are long gone! (30 years!! I am not the same person!) I love my wife very much. Thank you!

John!

Be careful with the scam.

As for Aidan (4:01) -- I truly think it is a scam. It is the same as the Critic's.

It happened with the other v/blogs with the ASLexpo stuff which is a scam. It happened to DRMZZ's blog. I truly think it is a scam. Take a look before you get the virus.

Terrific! Get a cameraman to tape you and a waiter signing COFFEE,
MILK, and SUGAR! Make a movie!

Fun!

Hello ABC! 4:01: it wasn't me who wrote it. It is same thing with other blog. This is getting so old. We know that it wasn't me anyway..

Yeah, it is good way to approach that. It is fun. And same time bring the awareness to ASL to hearing people.

Thanks for sharing with us.. Smile, Aidan

Cool! You got lucky...you got a patient and adventurous waitress - many waitress have no patience! They would scowl and call the manager to report a problem customer!

You got a hit with that waitress and both of you had fun. Wish I was there!

John,
