A "new" Deaf joke to me. I guess it missed me over the years till now... A great job of telling the joke!! How about telling us the one about the lumberman and big, tall tree...

This joke has nothing to do with deafness or hearing at all. It made me wonder: why was it so popular in schools for the deaf, to the point of becoming a classic?

I think it might have to do with disability: here are all those people unable to blow out a candle and then along comes a normal person who takes a different way that they overlooked.

Is this joke also told in other schools, i.e. for the blind, for the physically disabled, etc?

lolllllllll

Interesting! I haven't heard of that old joke. Maybe I am new generation which I haven't heard of it.
Thank u for ur great sharing this funny joke with us.

Hi Diane

Maybe it is a 'birthday' joke rather than a 'Deaf' joke?? It is a good one for any one, but it is really funny to Deaf kids because of their attempts to achieve "k" "p" "t" in their speech training... Who knows?

Dianrez,

Just a good reminder that our hands are more powerful than lips in Deaf community. That is why it is a good joke and does apply to us.

I think you are in pain. I saw you make a face as your fingers get burned. No wonder you spell ABC at end using your left hand. Tsk, tsk.

Yeah I have seen this joke long time ago too -- with a little more story behind it...

Hey ABC, it's nice that you use a visual aid, quite clear. I have heard of this story a long time ago, and like Jay said, that there's more to the story than you shared, but the one you shared was nice.

Until then, stay cool yourself.

Oh, that's right! I forgot about that joke since the last time I heard it when I was a child. You surely "sign" it out a lot better in your version!

That's true since this joke didn't mention anything about deaf issues but it was a symbolic joke for us deafies. Power to the hand that represents ASL!

Yes I remember that story very well. I remember Mary Beth Miller telling me the story herself. However it was a different version. She had the story told through the house trying to blow a candle downstairs when everyone was sleeping upstairs.

Thanks for bringing me good old memories from the past :)
